Preserved for His Purpose: Beyond The Drowning
Scripture Readings
• "The LORD will keep you from all harm—He will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." — Psalm 121:7–8 (NIV)
• "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart." — Jeremiah 1:5 (NIV)
• "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." — Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV)
Reflection
When I was around 15 or 16 years old, I jumped off the end of our dock into a lake that had recently been dredged by a huge boat. The water, which used to be just deep enough for a quick push-off and easy return to the surface, had now become much deeper than I realized.
I was familiar with that spot and confident in my swimming skills, but this time, when I dove in and went down, I couldn't find the bottom. I began to struggle and realized I wasn't going to make it back up in time.
In that desperate moment, I gave up. I took a deep breath, fully expecting to inhale water and drown. It wasn't that I wanted to die — it was just a raw, honest moment of helplessness. But instead of drowning, I kept moving upward. I surfaced and was able to breathe as if nothing had happened.
A bit stunned and disoriented, I climbed out when my mom called me in for supper. I actually thought to myself that I had discovered something new: "If you take a big enough gulp of water, maybe you won't drown!" I even wanted to tell my mom my "discovery," but I never caught up with her to share it, and eventually, I forgot all about it.
It wasn't until many years later that the Lord revealed to me that it was His supernatural protection that saved me that day. He had a calling on my life — a purpose that I had already said "yes" to deep in my heart, even though I didn't fully understand it yet.
I had no clue that I had experienced a miracle. But God did.
🔹God's Protection, Even When We Don't Understand
God often intervenes in our lives in ways we do not see or recognize at the time. We might not even have the spiritual maturity or language to describe what He is doing. But He does it anyway — because He knows our hearts and the destiny He has written for us.
The psalmist tells us that the Lord watches over our coming and going, protecting us from all harm. His hand covers us long before we understand the depth of His love and faithfulness.
🔹Your Heart Matters More Than Your Perfection
It's not about being perfect or having everything figured out. God sees the heart. He knows when we are sincerely trying, even if we still make mistakes or fall short in our understanding.
He doesn't require us to have all the answers before He moves on our behalf. He is drawn to a surrendered, willing heart more than to polished religious performance.
🔹Preserved for His Calling
There is a reason God preserves you. He has prepared good works for you — divine assignments and opportunities that only you can fulfill. Just like me that day on the dock, He has protected you countless times, perhaps without you even realizing it, because He knows your "yes."
You are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that He planned long ago. He has preserved you because He delights in partnering with you to accomplish His purposes on earth.
🔹Don't Let Imperfection Stop You
How many times do we hold back because we think we're not good enough, mature enough, or spiritual enough? But God does not ask for perfection; He asks for faith and a willing heart.
He knows we're still growing. And even in our weakest, most uncertain moments, He shows Himself strong. He covers and fills the gaps, just as He filled my lungs with life when I expected death.
🔹The Glove Analogy
Corrie ten Boom beautifully described this truth: A glove by itself can do nothing. It is lifeless and powerless. But when a hand slides into the glove, it suddenly becomes capable of movement and purpose.
We are the glove. The Holy Spirit is the hand. When we make room for Him to fill every part of our lives, He empowers us to do what we could never do on our own. We can write, build, comfort, heal, pray, serve, and love — all because His hand is moving inside of us.
Prayer
Father, thank You for protecting me, even in moments when I didn't see or understand it. Thank You for preserving my life for Your purpose. Teach me to trust You beyond my own logic and strength. Fill me completely, Holy Spirit — be the hand in this glove. Empower me to walk out the good works You prepared for me. Help me to see Your love in every moment of rescue and to never take for granted Your faithfulness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Points To Consider
• Can you recall a moment in your life when God protected or preserved you without your understanding? How does this shape your view of Him today?
• Are you holding back because you feel imperfect or unprepared? What step of faith can you take today, trusting that He is enough?
• How can you invite the Holy Spirit to fill every "finger slot" of your life — to be the hand in your glove?
Declaration
I am preserved for His purpose. I am not alone. I am not powerless. His hand is in me, and I will move forward in faith, trusting His plan and His strength.
