Last Sweep

Last sweep

It's like cleaning out the garage. You begin with the large things, and then move onto the smaller things.  There are some things that we sweep around. Perhaps the gooey old chewing gum in the corner might wait, and we briskly sweep the broom over it.

But this time, we are talking about the last time that this garage is going to be

swept.  Everything must come up and come off. It doesn't matter whether we want to mess with the chewing gum, or the oil spot, or some really nasty thing that has been there for ages.  Everything needs to be cleaned.

The real garage that we are sweeping is our hearts. And just like that garage, we procrastinated getting it thoroughly clean.  Often, we live in the moment and with a worldview.  We have not lived in eternity with the perspective from heaven.  But very soon now, those yucky spots on the floor are going to be left behind, because we are going to be gone.

Soon the Lord Jesus will be calling his body home. And that terrible and nasty relationship that was never healed has been left sitting in the corner. You and I may be leaving, but that nasty thing is going to stay here. Let's suppose one of those nasty things is actually a relationship with your in-laws. Try and try as you might, you have not been able to restore it and get on good terms with them.  And if you can't, then you can't.  But the one thing you can do, and that I can do, is to take a good look at it and make sure that there really isn't anything we can do.

Your in-laws may have disowned you and refused to talk to you ever again. But my exhortation to you is this, are you really sure that you have taken away all the thoughts of "gooey and nasty" which equals "avoidance?

So what I am saying is this: We are going to be gone soon. It is imperative that we do everything we can to make sure we have done everything we could. Your mother-in-law, right now, may be a very ugly person, she might even smell bad, but you and I cannot afford to let these factors hinder us. Do not look at them through the eyes of today, look at them through the eyes of eternity. It's possible that those we glaze over now might possibly make really good next-door neighbors in heaven.
